Scented candles are not difficult to make and easy to purchase if you aren’t into candle making.  For the most part essential oils are added to the wax being used just prior to the process of pouring the melted wax into a mold or container.  These essential oils for candle making can be found in the candle making sections of hobby shops or sometimes in places like health stores for oils normally associated with healing, like eucalyptus oil, for example.  There are literally hundreds of aromas available in candles in shops or on-line.  A good source is the CandleChem company web site.

Aromatherapy and Scented Candles

Aromatherapy is an alternative form of medical treatment and has been around for thousands of years.  There is evidence that some of the early Egyptian civilizations used aromatherapy rather extensively.  Today, it is more seriously practiced in Europe than in North America, and the French have used essential oils of lavender, for example, to soothe burns or minor cuts, and it is also used for its relaxation effects and for soothing headaches or even migraines.  So candles that have a lavender aroma can be used to create a relaxing and soothing atmosphere.

As mentioned above, eucalyptus oil is often used to clear airways in the body, and this author has used it often in the past to help treat his sinus condition.  Peppermint oil is also used for this purpose, often in conjunction with eucalyptus oil.  Essential oil of pepper is used to stimulate circulation and also for muscle pains and aches.  A large number of essential oils are used in the production of perfumes, and among these are basil oil, bergamot, lavender and rose oil.  Lemon oil is thought to be relaxing and can improve one’s mood.  Studies in Japan have shown that in vapor form it reduces stress in mice.

Critics of aromatherapy cite the fact that not many serious double blind studies of these substances have been done, but these studies are expensive.  Also, the possibilities of obtaining patents based on them are small, so there is generally little interest in doing them.  But if you have certain maladies or simply like the aroma of certain fragrances, lighting up a scented candle is an easy way to find relaxation or some remedy for a specific ailment.

Making Scented Candles

Essential oils are derived from distilling certain natural substances, but there are also chemical fragrances on the market as well.  If you are into making candles as a hobby, it is remarkably simple to add a few drops of a liquid essential oil and mix this into your melted wax just prior to pouring into a mold.  Whether one is looking for a particular remedy or simply wants an air freshening effect, scented candles are an easy way to set a mood in a house or apartment.  So if you are into candle making, make some scented samples the next time you make a batch and try them out.  And if you are not a candle maker, just purchase a candle with one of our favorite scents and see if it adds something to the atmosphere and décor of your home.
