Candle Colors

Multi-colored candles look great and can add style to a room, especially one that uses several color schemes.  You can make candles with any number of colors, but for the sake of simplicity this article will describe the technique for a two colored candle.  Obviously you will have to decide the colors you want and procure the color chips needed to dye your wax before you start working to make the candle.

Essentially the procedure will be the same as making a single colored candle, but the hot wax will be separated into two cans and dyed prior to pouring into your mold. To start

the process it is necessary to have a clean and organized work area.  This is often your kitchen as many people use the heating elements on their stove to melt the wax.  The wax melting process should typically be done in a double boiler.  Be sure not to mix water in the bottom of the double boiler with the hot wax that is in the top portion, as the wax could explode.  For the same reasons avoid getting any wax onto your heating element.  These are very important considerations since safety is imperative with hot wax that is near 200 degrees F.

Your wick needs to be prepared in the candle mold.  You should choose the proper size wick for each candle you make.  If the diameter of your candle is more than three inches you will want to use a large sized wick.  If the diameter is 2-3 inches you’ll want to use a medium size wick, and if it is smaller than two inches in diameter use a small size wick.  The wick should be prepared in the normal fashion.  If you purchased a wick that is already primed, you can go ahead and cut it to the proper length.  If your wicks are not yet primed you’ll need to soak them in melted wax for five minutes and then place them on waxed paper and allow the wax to harden.  Measure the height of the mold container you will be using and add two inches to that length.  This will be the length of wick you will use during candle making, and the wick will be trimmed after the candle has hardened and is out of its mold.

After the mold is properly prepared and the wax has melted and is at the correct temperature as specified with the wax you purchased, pour the melted wax into two metal cans.  Add your choice of color chips to each of the cans.  For the two color candle being considered in this article, one color will go in one can and another will go in the other.  Mix the colors well in each can.  If you desire to add some fragrance in the candle, add one or two drops of the appropriate essential oil to each can, and again mix well.  Decide which of the two colors you want for the bottom section of the candle and pour that wax into your mold using a pouring pot until the mold is half full.  Allow this wax to cool and set.  Reheat the wax that has been dyed in a different color and then use that wax to pour the top half of the candle.  Pour until the mold is about 90% full, and save some of that color of wax to top off the candle.  Allow the wax to cool, and top off the candle as necessary at the end.  Once the candle is set and has been removed from the mold, trim the wick to about a quarter of an inch.  This completes the process of making a two colored candle.
